Benefits of a compression driver
Compression Drivers are more expensive than piezo tweeters. So what are the advantages?
A compression driver will ‘throw’ the programme material to the back of the hall with punch and clarity. They are also far more efficient for a given watt of power, and more robust for demanding applications.
Intelligibility (ie the way human beings tell the difference between sounds), is by the high frequency content of those sounds. Compression drivers will produce a higher quality, more intelligible reproduction of the programme material.

Placement of your speaker
1.
Turn the speakers inward and downward towards the listener.
2.
Use min. no. of speakers - each ‘excites’ its own reverberant field.
3.
Use a correctly installed graphic
4.
Choose a speaker with a correctly specified dispersion angle
(typically 90° x 40°) which is just wide enough to cover the congregation.
Which Monitor?
Wedges or small stand mounting speakers?
We would recommend powered wedges over individual small speakers:
Cost
- A powered wedge is cheaper than buying a small speaker, an amp, a mic stand, a stand adaptor and a mic stand separately.
Small Footprint
- a tripod/mic takes up more space than a floor wedge.
Less Feedback
- Small speakers near a mic are more prone to feedback.
Better Quality
- A powered 10" or 12" speaker will produce a better sound (particularly for music) than a small 4" speaker. The wedges can also take keyboards direct.
Economy
- One wedge monitor serves more than one person.
Visually
- Wedge monitors are less obtrusive & less likely to be knocked
Mono or Stereo?
It depends!
Mono is better for speech, eliminating phase cancellations from two or more speakers. On the other hand stereo can benefit the worship music group - if the room permits. Not everybody can be seated in the centre spot all at the same time. Stereo may be a disadvantage to those seated in the extreme left and right of the building.
100v line or low Impedance Speakers?
100v line speakers have improved but they are not suitable for modern band requirements as they have a limited frequency response.

Why have a sub woofer?
They give much greater presence in the bass frequency range below 250 Hz.
If the type of music you play requires that ‘thump in the chest’, a sub woofer is essential. Adding a crossover unit (when adding a sub woofer to your system) and placing it inline before your amplifiers, will send only low frequencies to the sub woofer and high and mid frequencies to your main speakers. This has the advantage of placing less strain on your amplifiers, making them run more efficiently and ultimately allow for greater volume!
Placement of a subwoofer is not as critical as high frequency drivers, since frequencies below 200Hz are omni-directional.
Sub woofers are available as either powered or unpowered (passive).
