DI Boxes

DI or 'Direct Injection Boxes' are an essential accessory for any live music setup where instruments are linked to the mixer. For instance, connecting Keyboards, Acoustic Guitars, guitar amps and other electronics usually requires a DI box.

There are passive and active DI boxes - Passive can be used 'in reverse' to convert balanced back to unbalanced signal. Active DIs may be battery powered or Phantom powered from the mixer.

There are a few jobs that DI boxes perform:

Balance the signal - convert unbalanced line level signals to balanced mic level signals - eliminates interference.

Ground Lift - Many DI boxes can cut the Ground Loop to fix troublesome earthing problems

Signal level attenuation - helps bring 'hot' signals to manageable levels for the mixer (eg 20dB Pad button)

Remember, you do get what you pay for - cheaper DI boxes will do the job but the more you spend the better the sound quality and the more dynamic and clean the signal will be.
