Shotgun mics are developed for picking up sound sources from a distance. Often seen on TV at football matches and outdoor events these mics are taylored not only for long range but also especially for speech and voice pickup with excellent side and rear sound rejection for highly directional response. These are all condenser type mics so require Phantom Power (PP) either from your mixer or from a separate PP supply but some models can use a battery.
